This project statement is about my senior capstone project. This capstone project is a semester-long creative journey to craft a large-scale idea into actual execution. These blog posts will show part of our more significant steps to prepare our projects to document our adventures. To learn more about what capstone is, you can find my description post here.

Project Statement

I am making a font called DLC Sans with universal weight and scale while being a functional, real-world typable font.

Project Description

This project is a means to give designers the ability to have a font that breaks the typical looks of a basic font and brings it to a new level. Having many weights to choose from will give any user the ability to make anything look how they want. This font will also be publicly accessible with legibility in any document.

Problems to Solve

How can I keep letter forms unique and straightforward at the same time?

How can I make this font look different from its competitors?

How can I keep the weights distinguishable?

What is the minimum size to present the font?

What is the maximum weight I can achieve without distorting the letters a noticeable amount?

What way should I use the font on printed mediums so that it holds value and charm?

Why Does This Matter to Me?

This project matters to me because it all started as a personal journey. I have always wanted to have a font of my own. When I began to dive deep into designing, I never could find one that fit my opinion of a font with a lot of flexibility and variance. Making DLC Sans into reality would give me great joy as I can finally share my goal with the world.

Output

Single page font display website(HTML, SCSS)

Posters showing the font displayed in different weights, point sizes, and mediums(8.5’’ x 11’’, 13’’ x 19’’ and if possible a 26’’ x 40’’)
