Introduction

I have taken on a task that I have wanted to do for a year now. My goal was to create an educational kiosk that had the level of detail and style to be incorporated into the St. Louis Zoo as an education tool as well as a tool to enhance the overall guest experience by providing a fun and interactive way to learn even more about the beloved animals that call the zoo their home.

With this task I needed to have a user testing phase. Under the extreme circumstances of Covid I was limited to only testing my family members as testing other student designers was not allowed. We wanted to have feedback from non-art intensive individuals.

I created my questions based on the content in the home page, the secondary pages with the animal information, and how the users felt the color and design would look in the setting of the St. Louis Zoo.

Insights

The Home Page

  • More details or some minor effects to make it feel less flat
  • Wanted to see more pop
  • Felt the images were great
  • Could use sounds on the cats when clicked
  • Liked the simplicity of the page

Secondary Pages

  • Needs more detail near highlighted red area
  • Map looked weird when it zooms slow on other pages
  • Wished it was a little less flat on the secondary pages
  • Great information and facts were provided
  • Wanted a better map placed
  • Felt borders on the secondary images looked out of place
  • More information on the map area would be nice

Design

  • The design fit the theme of the zoo very well
  • Colors were great and matched with what the zoo had
  • The overall design was consistent throughout all the pages

Re-Design

After the feedback was given I set out to find ways to fix the issues pointed out and add more details where I could to make this the best kiosk I could. These are the changes I set out to make:

  • Make the map start centered when the secondary page loaded
  • I want to add a drop shadow to the title area on the homepage to create more depth
  • Place text near the highlighted area on the map to provide information about the location highlighted
  • I plan to remove the borders on the images for the secondary page
  • Plan to add roar sounds to the cats after clicking their picture to make it feel more playful and immersive
